From the Chairperson – July/August Update

The industrial hemp sector in Western Australia is a bit slow at the moment, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing to report.

We have our Award Dinner coming up and the iHempExpo. Keep your eye on our social media channels for information and developments. The nominations are closed for the iHempWA awards and finalists will be announced on 26 August 2023.

It is great to see that businesses are taking up the limited time offer to upgrade their membership from Associate to Corporate memberships. We are also happy to announce that we have our first corporate iHempWA Sponsor, Hemp Squared.

Our corporate members, Herbee Beer, Hemp Squared, Sophia Moermond (Legalize Cannabis Party), Sunrise Hemp, Harvey Hemp and Medicann are showing great support for iHempWA.

On the flip side of the great news is a reduction of interest from the current government in the industrial hemp sector. Since Alannah MacTiernan (who is a great supporter of industrial hemp) has handed over the reins to Jackie Jarvis, we have seen a slowdown in interest in industrial hemp in Western Australia. We hope to engage with the minister in the next months to highlight the economic, social and environmental benefits that can be achieved in the growing and utilisation of industrial hemp. We will also highlight the business opportunities that are being pursued and the support the government should provide to grow the industrial hemp sector for growers, processors and product refiners and manufacturers. We hope that we can fill the lack of understanding of the fast applications and benefits of hemp as well as the economic viability of hemp as a crop in Western Australia. The hemp sector will continue to grow, but government support will accelerate this growth.

We all have a role to play in the education and awareness of industrial hemp. There is a great opportunity for you to help with this at the iHempWA Expo on 10 September 2023 at Valley Social in the Swan Valley in WA. If you have products you want to showcase, talk about hemp, educate people or be part of (what will undoubtedly be) a great day, get in touch with me or one of the committee members to find out how we can help you.

NOTICE: Before the Expo on Sunday morning we will hold our Annual General Meeting at Valley Social 9:30-10:30am 10 Sept 2023. Our current committee are passionate and actively working together to organise these events and to promote and support the hemp industry throughout the year. It’s a necessary and rewarding job and we invite your expressions of interest.

Nominations for all office bearer and committee positions are now invited, written nominations must be received by the secretary 7 days prior the AGM. OFFICE BEARER & COMMITTEE MEMBER NOMINATION FORM.pdf can be downloaded from the members area of our website.

For now book your Award Dinner tickets (close 6 September), expo stalls, upgrades to memberships so that we can continue to celebrate all things hemp and grow the industry!

Be good

We celebrate the recent positive changes in Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp foods legislation. We believe Hemp (low THC Cannabis) will be an integral part of the Green Rush for WA in coming years. A sustainable multi-sector industry, a land enriching agricultural boom, a processing and manufacturing boom creating sustainable and long term employment opportunities across the state in rural and urban communities.

Once initial processing facilities are established hemp fibre/hurd/fines will supply new manufacturing businesses producing anything from buildings and insulation to clothing and fashion accessories to paper and particleboard to cars and super capacitor batteries to nanofibre bioplastics and biofuels, to super nutritional food and drink products and  of course medicine.

With your help spreading the new knowledge; we are fostering the public’s growing awareness and interest in hemp to increase general demand for hemp products. We are spreading the good word via education events and workshops. By revealing the true nature of the cannabis plant, its ancient and modern history, its vast array of uses and myriad products that can be made, along with the potential long term ecological and ethical value to our mother earth and her people.

We are supporting and representing all hemp industry stakeholders and collaboratively engaging with all hemp/cannabis industry regulators to create a community with a common vision…to establish, develop and support a sustainable and prosperous hemp industry for Western Australia.
